YOU CAN DEAL WITH UPSET PEOPLE AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF

Recently I’ve experienced several people who have gotten really upset with their partner or with someone else.  This seems to be happening a lot lately.  It got me thinking about the best ways to handle these kinds of situations with upset people so you can end up feeling comfortable inside yourself and not dragged into the fray.

Upset Woman

Upset Woman

You can be sure that if you do get all stirred up when someone is upset with you or is upset around you, that there is a little something inside of you that is related to their upset.

Make a point of staying aware of your own reactions and if you do notice you are getting triggered, check to see what issue you have that is yours to address at some point.

WHAT YOU THINK OF ME IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS

In reality, another person being upset really has nothing to do with you.  A good reminder for you to quietly give yourself is “WHAT YOU THINK OF ME IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS.”  Also remind yourself that you do not have to be part of their upset.  Remember, engaging with someone who is triggered can open you up to be a target for their attack since they are already wanting to lash out.

Be happy,don't worry

Be happy don’t bother

Ask yourself, “Do I Want to Be Right, or Do I Want to Be Happy?”  If a person has an opinion about you or about someone else, so what? What if you just allow them to have their experience?  You don’t have to do anything.  You can just take a breath and allow them to vent or do what they choose to do.  It can be very helpful to acknowledge to the person that, “I really respect how you’re feeling,” or “I get that this is really important to you,” or simply, “I hear you.”

Become the observer, stay aware and without any judgement.  To do otherwise, to get into the conflict place, is you choosing to do battle.  When you step into that “he said, she said” place there’s anger involved and nothing constructive happening.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU

In truth, it’s all about you.  There’s not anyone over there.  We get opportunities to decide if we are going to be a master or a victim, to dive in and join the fight or not, to “get in the ring” or be in peace, joy and love.  It’s up to you to choose.

It usually takes at least 72 hours for a person’s body to quiet down after they’ve gotten activated because hormones have been released.  You can observe the person during this time and stay detached, inside yourself.  It might help to internally “click the mute button” so you stay in observation and do not engage.

I did an audio recording on my podcast, “Waking Up with Esateys” about dealing with upset people.  Please go to link to listen to the full episode
